Round Threee Report Porvided by Justin “JC” Connie

It was another great day of BC Footy for the league and the Delta Bayhawks. Coming into round three with a 1 and 1 record, the Bayhawks looked to keep their winning ways going. The only thing standing in their way was the first place and number one rivals, the West Coast Saints who were looking to take a commanding lead in the BC standings. It was not the ice cold rain this time but the intense heat that would play a factor in the game, which team would have enough energy in the tank to win.

After coming off the emotional win in round two against the Vancouver Cougars, the Hawks looked to come out and play with that same emotion. From the first bounce to the last the Hawks came firing out with strong rucking from the middle and brilliant footy skills by the Bayhawks forwards, the Hawks shocked the BC Footy league scoring 5 goals in the first quarter to 0 by the Saints. Even with a commanding lead the Hawks knew it was far from over, with three more quarters left to play the Saints were determined to tie it up and take the lead.

With the start of the second quarter the Hawks came out with the same intensity from the first , knowing to not let the Saint get any chance of momentum. With strong playing from the back line to the forward line the Saints had answer for the Bayhawks. Only till the last 5 minutes of the second quarter did the Saints show life kicking 2 goals in that period, giving them momentum in the second half. Even though the Hawks were leading, they still needed to stay focused and alert because no lead is safe when facing the Saints.

At the start of the third quarter it was the West Coast Saints who came out firing putting the Hawks on the back of their heels. With most of the play in the Hawks back end it was the great playing from Hawks back line that kept the lead in tacked. Every time the ball inched closer to the Bayhawks goal line, the Hawks would work twice as hard to get it back out. With the Saints winning the third quarter it set the fourth quarter up for a grand finish.

The rivalry of these two teams showed in the final quarter, the Saints throwing everything they had at the Hawks. It was a intense hard fought quarter leaving both teams battered and bruised. With tons of hard hitting the Hawks went into lockdown mode, bring the ball to the ground trying to run out the clock. The Saint on the other had took the ball to the air making spot on kicks, marching the ball down into goal kicking range and putting up 6 points every time. The Saints seemed to be on the come back until the final minutes of the game when the Hawks kicked a goal to seal the deal, giving them a 63 to 41 win over the Saints.

The Bayhawks have now set themselves up for a crack at first place in the league but have to get by the Burnaby Eagles in round 4 to have a chance.

Players of the game for the Bayhawks: Rory Herd, Graham Kidd, Eddie Edis, Ben “B.J.” Wilson

Note: According to standard practice and Section 24 of the Proposed Bayhawks Constitution, notice for an AGM SHOULD BE a minimum of 14 days. However, putting together this meeting has been massively consuming of my free time and there are football-related issues that need to be addressed by the new Executive immediately. So, Section 24 also states that Notice can be given in less time if there is unanimous approval. I humbly ask that you all give your blessing to waive the customary notice, hoping that 7 days notice will be all right with you (?).

The timing is an hour later than usual to accommodate the Bayhawks first REAL TRAINING SESSION at Burnaby Lake West Complex, starting at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday. Anyone needing more information about this can contact Coach Ryan Marks at 604 760 4119 or marksy_619@hotmail.com

If you need a ride from Vancouver’s West Side or Downtown, you can call or text me at 604 218 9661 (I’ll be coming through Downtown just prior to 6 o’clock. Reservations are first-come, first-served.)

Anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in running for an Executive position is encouraged to enquire about or nominate themselves for a position. You can e-mail me with your enquiry or your nomination, and they will be passed on to the Chairperson. (The proposed list of Officers are found below. Don’t worry about the formalities; we’ll find a spot that is suited to your time and your talent!)

As this is the first stand-alone AGM for the Bayhawks, please encourage as many people as possible to attend–including those from the other Clubs and the NDJAFL. Please forward this e-mail to anyone who may not have been contacted directly or may have inadvertently been missed in error (with the Club’s and my sincere apologies).

A brief summary of the purpose for Thursday’s gathering:

Part 1 of the Meeting is to identify those who are eligible to vote and to approve the Agenda and the Meeting Chairperson (as I intend on standing for election as a candidate).

Part 2: Adopting a Constitution. A motion will be made to adopt the Proposed Constitution, with an explanation. The floor will then be open to previously-submitted amendments and any amendments put forward at the Meeting. There will be time for discussion, at the Chairperson’s discretion. Voting members will then vote on the Constitution and amendments as a package, or if necessary, amendments will be voted on separately. All that is required is 50 per cent plus 1 vote to ratify. We must ratify some sort of Constitution in order to proceed with the AGM.

Part 3: This is the AGM proper and the holding of Elections for the 2013 Bayhawks Executive. The positions will be voted on in the order that follows (pending approval of the positions in the Proposed Constitution):

Part 4 is the “Wrap-up” where the newly-elected President can give a short speech, the Senior Coach (Ryan Marks) will be confirmed, recruitment materials (contact people, posters and business cards) will be finalized and a date for the first Executive Committee Meeting will be set for early March.

Bay Hawks end regular season with a bang – Report by JC

The Bay Hawks coming in to the final game of the season winless looked to the Whistler cup for a last chance of victory. The only thing going for the Hawks was that they are undefeated at the Whistler cup and the Hawks looked keen to keep it that way. With their pride on the line the Hawks took the field ready to battle the ever so deadly Burnaby Eagles. The Eagles just nudging a victory over the Bay Hawks in their last meeting, looked to crash the party once again on the Hawks chances for victory. With the scorching sun beating down on the field it was sure to be a battle of the ages.

With the Hawks starting the quarter slow and with low intensity, the Eagles quickly realizing that took full advantage. The Eagles lead by the fantastic four Aussies kicked a couple of quick goals already setting a unwanted familiar path for the Bay Hawks. Also with great playing from the Eagles Canadian players it looked like the Hawks would be in deep up at Whistler and their streak in jeopardy. Mid way in the quarter, the Hawks seemed to off found their legs setting up a couple of chances for goals. Sadly the Hawks had to settle for a couple of behinds. Thanks to some key goal misses from the Eagles the deficit was not out of reach for the Hawk to comeback too.

At the start of the second quarter time the Hawks made one position change, sending Big Tom Tommy Gun at full forward. Tommy Gun presenting himself as the main target for the Hawks, using his body and skill was able to kick a flurry of goals and put the Hawks back in the game. Another player who stepped up in the game, or should I say players were Hawks Canadian player Conor Macdonald, Clay Lund, and Justin Connie. Conor playing in the forward pocket presented himself as a great second option that surely overwhelmed the Eagles defence. As well with Clay Lund roving inand around the middle showed great skill and leader ship, being able to rally the Hawks and help keep their composers. Finally Justin “the Murph” Connie, the lone center half back man became a great relief man for the Hawks mid- fielders. Creating options in the back and being able to find open players, the second quarter was when the Hawks came alive. Cutting at 20 point deficit to just 8 points the Hawks were ready to take the lead in the third quarter.

With both teams sweating buckets from the hot sun, they took the field for third quarter time. This quarter was the battler of who could stay cooler in the heat of thing. Each team came out with intensity not giving an inch, if one team made a good play the other would answer right back. Even if it was from a nice hit to a goal each team definitely came ready to play in this quarter. For instance when the Eagles went on a two goal kicking streak getting ready to shut the Hawks down, the littlest of Hawks Jason “Sun Shine” Silem battled right back and kicked a whopping 35 to 40 meter goal. In the end lifting the spirits of the Hawks and showing that there is no quit in this team. At the end of third quarter time the Eagles lead the Hawks by just 2 goals setting the stage for an unforgettable fourth quarter.

Before the start of the fourth quarter Hawks ruck-man Chris told the team to look at the score board showing them that they are still in it and that the game was still up for grabs, it just mattered who wanted it more. With the Hawks great playing in the mid-field lead by John A ,the Hawks were able to win a couple key possession leaving Tom Tommy Gun easy marks and goals. But there was no quit from both sides, the only problem was the Hawks were running out of time and needed to take the lead soon or lose it all. It could of been the altitude, the beating hot sun or the spirit of the Bay Hawks of old, but the Hawks seemed to of tapped some hidden energy and was able pressured to Eagles for the ball. With great playing from Marlena shutting down key Canadian players, she was able to bring the Hawks play up a level. With final fourth quarter minutes coming to an end the Hawks down by 5 points needed a goal to lead by one. The Eagle desperately hanging on the lead were trying to stop the Hawks from entering their offensive zone for that game winning goal. But with precision kicking the Hawks were able to get the ball to none other than Tommy Gun. With the pressure on Tom did not looked phased as he booted the Hawks into the lead, minutes later with the buzzer sounding the Hawks could finally stop holding their breath. With victory in the air the Hawks showed the league that it does not matter how you start but finish and did they finish with a bang. The Hawks still keep their Whistler winning streak in tacked now looked forward to entering the post-season and taking on the Vancouver Cougars. The Cougars bring a heavy favourite could the Hawks play spoiler and send themselves to the Grand Finale. Guess we will find out on game day.

Bayhawks continue improvement in best showing for the year

It was not just the great weather that brought the crowds out but the spectacular showing of footy on Saturday. The 0 and 6 Delta Bay Hawks were playing their sister club the ever so dangerous 2 and 4 Burnaby Eagles. Both teams were coming off loses, each looking to put a win in their column.

In the first quarter the Bay Hawks needed a player to make a statement, and that was none other than big Shawny. Demanding the ball in the full forward position, he alone kicked all of the Bay Hawks goals in the first quarter. Could Shawn be the new Sheepy for the Bay Hawks?

If only he could ruck as well! Of course the only way for Shawn to kick goals was thanks to the Delta Bay Hawks new re-amped middle. Leading the way was Bay Hawks 1 year vet John Agius commanding the Hawks against the Eagles’ big four.

Furthermore Tom, Dusty Allen and Hawks new ruckman Geoff played as if they have been teammates for years. In the first quarter, the Bay Hawks came out and showed the Eagles that they better show their ‘A’ game if they wanted to pull a victory.

In the second quarter the Bay Hawks and Eagles clashed back and forth exchanging kicks, hits, and goals, it was as if an unstoppable force met an immoveable object. The first 15 minutes of the second quarter was certainly a showing of both teams strong force of defence.

Countless times the Eagles pressured the Hawks defence, sending them on the brink of collapse. The Bay Hawks defence did not falter thanks to the support from full back Chris and pocket player Dougy’s amazing spoiling rattling the Eagles offence. All seemed to be going well for the Hawks until the last five minutes, the Eagles screeched to the lead going on a goal kicking splurge.

After a few calming words from Bay Hawks coach Josh Barnes, the Hawks refocused and were now mentally ready to take back the lead from the Eagles. At the start of the third quarter, the Hawks came roaring with more goals from none other than full forward Shawn. With slick hand passes and a will for victory the Hawks were able to end the third quarter with a slim lead of two and a half goals.

With one quarter left, victory was in the hands of the Hawks, all they had to do was douse the Eagles’ ever so dangerous forwards. But sadly the will of the Bay Hawks was no match to the veteran skill of the eagles, as they went on a goal frenzy and stole back the lead from the Hawks. With blazing speed from Eagles’ player Jim Oertel out of the middle and Eagles long lost and new recruit Paddy Milne and Pepsi, the Eagles lead by 7 with minutes to spare.

The Hawks fought to the last breath but just couldn’t seem to get the ball into their forward line. As the buzzer rang the Hawks just fell short once again giving them a familiar taste of defeat, but with victory so close this game was the toughest to swallow.

The game would of not have been close if it was not for Shawn the gun goal kicker, piling up an amazing 7 goal performance. Also great plays from Bay Hawks wingers Matt Raffa and Jason “Sunshine” Silen giving the Hawks a pressure relief and being able to come through in the heat of the moments. In the end it was truly one of the best games in BC footy history and should serve as a good hitout leading up to finals.

Next Hawks game is against the former sister club team the West Coast Saints at Langley – DW Poppy Field – Cnr 237 St and 52 Ave Langley BC on July 28th. Game time 1 pm
Post Match – Ceili’s Downtown c

Lets win this one for Josh Barnes guys!!

Burnaby Eagles 13 10 88 def
The Bayhawks 12 9 81

Bayhawks continue improvement putting out best performance of season.

By Justin Connie (Not Lex Perry)

It was an ideal day for footy at the Bay Hawks second ever home field hosting. The forecast called for cloudy rains but instead there was nothing but sun and hot weather. Even though the weather was perfect the Hawks still had a storm to weather playing against the power house and undefeated (5-0) Vancouver Cougars.

In first quarter time the Hawks came out ready to play, with their quick hand passing, spot on kicks and overwhelming time of possession the Bay Hawks stormed to a quick lead in the first 10 minutes of play, with goals by none other than Josh(the gun) Barnes and new comer Dusty Allen.

The lead was short lived with the Cougars clawing ahead by seven point by end of quarter time. Even though Cougars lead by seven points there was a sense of shock among the team knowing that their undefeated season was on the line.

In second quarter of play the Cougars came roaring out with their classic run gun offence, out of the middle and fast/sharp kicks to their full forwards. Leaving the Bay Hawks backmen to defend bombardment after bombardment of footballs entering Hawks zone.

By the end of second quarter time the Cougars jumped to a seven goal lead and blanked the Hawks, leaving them scoreless in the quarter. The Cougars lead could of been worse if it was not junior rookie Bay Hawks Jason (Sun Shine) Silen and Brennan Lew-Cooke with their quick thinking and lighting fast speed, being able to send the ball out of danger each time it came near them. Also with the help of co-captain Clay Lund controlling the back line, giving the Hawks a fighting chance in the second half.

In third quarter, every time the Hawks seemed to get a goal the Cougars would answer right back with a goal of their own. But on the positive note the Hawks seemed to of been following the game plan of ball possession, and not making it easy for the Cougars. As well applying pressure on the ball when they did not have it, leaving the Cougars frustrated and bitter by end of third quarter time. With solid plays of kicks and grabs by John A. and first time game players Jackko and Doug, the Bay Hawks had a chance to pull a narrow but not impossible come from behind win in the finale quarter.

With inspiring words from coach Josh Barnes saying “do not give in to defeat” and “play this quarter as it was your last quarter of footy you’ll ever play!!” sending a strong message to the team to win this quarter and make a statement to the league that the Bay Hawks are for real. With a strong finale push the Bay Hawks tapped into over drive and pushed the Cougars team to almost breaking point. Tempers started to flare on both sides making the game a good old fashion brute footy match. For instance Marlena Ginocchio getting sandwich in a double sheppard by the Cougars that would leave any other down for the count. Instead she got back up and played the rest of the game sending a message that there is no quit in this young Bay Hawks team. Even with the Hawks final drive they shot themselves in the foot with a flurry of behinds and the third quarter blunder. Furthermore with the Cougars shut down defence this mountain was too high for the Hawks to climb over. All was not lost though, with the dying minutes of the game Sun Shine awarded a 50 meter free kick was given a chance to kick a 40 meter goal. With the whole Cougars team chirping him as he went for goal, he soon silenced the Cougars kicking the ball long and well passed the center poles scoring six points for the Hawks.

Even though it was a Cougars victory at Cresent Park Fields on Saturday the Bay Hawks looked like a footy team with an idnetity. With a solid mix of Aussies and Canadian players and more to come in the near future the Bay Hawks are shaping up and are getting ready for playoffs. With a four week break and just three games left in the season the Hawks will be hard at training tweaking their game and preparing a game plan for the ever so dangerous Burnaby Eagles.

“Like the Eagles of old their strong and their bold” game venue – Burnaby Soccer Fields (Behind the Rugby fields), 3760 Sperling Avenue, Burnaby, July 21, Start time 3pm Post Match – Moose’s Down Under
